Maluhia Cottage is a second-story retreat, elevated to capture breezes and offer unobstructed views of one of the world’s most magnificent mountains. It is a sweet, airy cottage with high ceilings and windows all around, hardwood and tile floors, casually and comfortably decorated for easy living at the beach. The wrap-around balcony lanai with attractive latticed balustrade, coupled with large sliding doors on two sides, gives the sense of seamless indoor-outdoor living.
Laid out for comfort and convenience, you’ll appreciate the compact yet open kitchen, which flows right into the sitting-and-TV room and then to the dining area and living room. Louvered pocket and folding doors offer privacy to the bedroom, although leaving them open offers you an additional place from which to enjoy the sunrise.
The furniture is island-style: comfortable and homey, including a couch/queen futon, loveseat/twin futon, cushion-topped bench/coffee table, rattan-and-wood desk. The teak dining table and chairs seat six. A china closet of rattan and wood holds an array of dishes, glassware, lauhala placemats and napkins. A bookcase provides “good read” material and Hawaiiana, while a large “tapa” (the ancient art of pounding tree bark into cloth and decorating it with artistic markings or petroglyphs) wall hanging graces the wall above.
The sitting room between the kitchen and dining area has a matching couch and chair for reading, relaxing, watching television or just keeping the cook company.
Of course, much of your time will be spent exploring the Puako seaside or visiting beautiful nearby Waialea Bay Beach and Hapuna State Park Beach, but Maluhia Cottage also offers outdoor options. A large, grassy yard, which receives afternoon shade from the neighbor’s monkey pod tree, is a great place for kids to run off energy! Privacy (and snacks) come from banana plants and Hawaiian chili pepper bushes (watch out, they can be pretty spicy). A Weber charcoal grill, outdoor chairs and loungers and a screened-in lanai make for simple outdoor dining.
If your group needs additional space (the upstairs can sleep five), the downstairs suite is available for rent (but never to a separate party, to assure your privacy). Newly remodeled, the suite offers two twin beds (or one king), pretty Hawaiian-style quilts, a new couch, simple, graceful wood occasional pieces and all-new bathroom: sink/vanity, medicine chest, toilet and roomy walk-in shower with spa-type rain shower head and whimsical fish accent tiles. Ceiling fans, flatscreen high-definition television with cable and WiFi, wall phone, CD player make this a comfy haven for your additional guests. A slider leads to the screened lanai with dining table and chairs, breakfast bar and stool, plus a mini-fridge and coffee maker. Because this suite is accessible only from an outside entrance, it may not be suitable for young children.
Upstairs: One mountain-view bedroom with queen-size bed, full bath with tub/shower combination, living area with two futon sleepers, full kitchen, dining area, large lanai.
Downstairs: One spacious bedroom has twin beds that can be converted to a king, plus living area with sofa and TV. This room also has a full bathroom and a screened-in lanai.
